Introduction to Tunnel Design and Construction

Although invisible and concealed, tunnels are ubiquitous infrastructure element all over the world. They are vital for urban power systems, sewerage, water, transportation, and other areas. This interactive workshop will introduce learners to all types of tunnelling, focusing on tuning techniques and their applicability in certain soils considering various physical limitations. The course will also place a particular emphasis on the ineluctable risks entailed in tunnelling. By the end of the programme, you will learn how to categorise subsurface materials in terms of their excavation and support function in a tunnel in rock and soils. Moreover, participants will discover new trends in tunnelling, understand and better select the correct tuning technique and tunnel lining system for a particular situation, select and identify proper investigations methods and instruments for tunnelling, and much more.
